Monday May 12th

Well I headed back to Wyoming to pick up another mustang. So many thoughts ran through my head when I thought about "Monty". Do I forget the whole thing and turn around, or do I continue to do what I love. Thanks to all of your phone calls and e-mails of encouragement I think I will be able to handle Monty's accident. So thank you.

I arrived at the mustang facility at about 8:30 am, and to my surprise I was told I would be getting another black horse. what are the chances? He is beautiful, solid black with a small white star on his forehead. Since I hade to wait an hour or so for the brand inspector I used the time to study the new horse, we had an immediate connection. He kept his eyes on me with a look of curiosity. He is a keeper.

The ride back was something. Less than a mile down the road he kicked the trailer so much that my license plate fell off. He sure didn't want to leave the other horses.

Well we got back around 2:00pm. I unloaded the mustang and let him run around the corral a little bit. After 20 minutes or so I grabbed some hay and offered it to him and he ate right out of my hand with only a little hesitation. I continued to ask a little more of him for the next 2 hours and by the end He let me pet him on the face and neck. What a good boy I got.

Tuesday May 13th

Worked with the mustang for about 2 hours today. he is still stand offish, but was able to put the lead rope on him and teach him how to lead. And of course a lot of petting and hand feeding. Even George was able to lead him around the round pen today.

Wednesday May, 14

What a good day. Today we started desensitizing. First with the lead rope which was something. He is really a fast learner, when he gets it he gets it. I then introduced the stick and string, plastic, stock whip, and finally the dreaded tarp. I'm still smiling. I didn't expect to get this far today so I am really happy. Oh by the way I have started calling him "Buddy".

Thursday, May 15th

Not a good day for training, rainy and chilly. I still went in Buddy's stall and petted him and brushed his mane out this morning. He was very accepting today, he likes attention.
Well the afternoon was much nicer. I led Buddy to the round pen and did a little refresher training with the lead rope and stick and string. He did great. He finally accepted me draping him with the tarp, and he even walked over it. I then taught him how to flex his neck laterally. (this guy really wants to please).
He also let me put a little weight on his back. He is learning fast, can't wait until tomorrow.

Friday, May 16th

Decided to wait till the evening to work with Buddy today. Good decision because we had a heck of a session. I taught him to yield his hind quarters and lunge left and right. Then I introduced him to a saddle blanket and a saddle. He took both really well. Except for the rodeo that broke out the second he realized that something was attached to him. This boy can Buck. He quit bucking after 15 seconds or so, then never tried again. I had him carry the saddle around for about 30 min while I lunged him around the round pen. I think he did very well. I took the saddle off and jumped up on him laying over his back. He danced around a bit and nipped my calf but calmed down fast and let me lay there. Why does it start getting dark when I am having so much fun?

Saturday, May 17th

Finally I get a chance to play with Buddy today. We picked up where we left off yesterday. Again I was able to saddle him without too much of a fuss. I put a little weight in the stirrup and stood up.... nothing he stood there very calm. Huh. A couple more times up and down....still nothing. good boy. Ok here goes I swung my leg over. Wow I am on him in the saddle. We walked around in small circles for the next 15 minutes. he did great. I ended the session there "lets end on a good note", I always say.

Sunday, May 18th

Well its my birthday today, and since no one really knows when Buddy was born I declared today his birthday as well. We took the day off formal training.

I got my arena built today so I let Buddy out to play and run around. He had a good time too. He even let me walk up to him in the middle and pet him and flex him a little. I think we got something here.

After about 1 hour I opened the gate back to his corral. Now its official Buddy has a girlfriend. Here name is "Reba". Buddy made a bee line from the arena through the corral and into his stall just to be next to her.Oh by the way Reba is a 10 year old pregnant mini. Ha Ha.
